Simon Roberts – Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Contrasting Jini and Web Services

In this session, Simon looks at the crucial differences in concept between Jini and Web services and describes the powerful architectural capabilities available in Jini that are not possible in Web services created around a SOAP infrastructure. He will also address fundamental issues of performance, scalability, extensibility, and interoperability (including legacy interoperability) of the technologies.

Security Foundations of Java

Simon will describe the three cornerstones of Java security: bytecode verification, the SecurityManager, and Classloaders. You will discover how Java is fundamentally different from ordinary machine languages, and why you can place a higher degree of trust in Java systems than in systems implemented in machine languages. He will continue with a discussion of some of the key issues related to writing secure Java code, and some of the key pitfalls you should avoid.
