Case Study: Mission Not Impossible – Department Applications Grow Up

What happens when you have lots of diverse applications, developed by different departments, that really should be shared? The problem is turning these individual programs into enterprise strength services. It gets worse if one or more of these "things" happen to be written in – perish the thought! – Visual Basic. In this session, David will describe the real world problems faced by one client after they decided to migrate from various enterprise applications and a huge number of disparate department-level applications that just "happened," to a cohesive information management system developed using "Think service!" as the starting point, and presented using a portal. He will cover the decisions, techniques, and problems – lessons learned about a work in progress.

Malicious Java: It CAN Happen Here!

We all know about the sandbox and the Java Security Manager. What happens? You surf to a Web page that contains a link to a Java applet and it executes, by default. Depending upon what you were doing you may not even be aware that Java code is running on your system. We know what happens with un-trusted Java applets, they run in a sandbox. So, what happens if you trust an applet – then it can do some interesting (and potentially nasty) things. Further, even the un-trusted applet can do things that create a bit of grief for the surfer. David will cover hostile Java code and what you can do to identify and prevent it – and also delve into the Java Security Manager.
