Introduction to Web Service Protocols

In this session, Noel will introduce the key Web Service protocols and related Java technologies, providing simple examples of each. Together we will explore the core WSDL, UDDI and SOAP specifications used to describe, locate and communicate with a Web Service. We will also examine various Java implementations of the necessary Web Service technologies, such as Apache SOAP, Axis, IBM WSTK, WASP, GLUE and Sun's Java XML family of packages (JAX Pack). After attending this session, you'll understand how to author, publish, locate, and access a Web Service. Who knows? Maybe the next Web Service published on XMethods.net will be yours!

A Visitors Guide to Jakarta

The Jakarta Project creates and maintains open source solutions on the Java platform for distribution to the public at no charge. There are many different server-side Java technologies under Apache's Jakarta umbrella, so many that it is very easy to get lost. In fact, there are so many synergistic, overlapping, competitive, and cooperative projects, including developer tools, libraries, presentation frameworks, portal technologies, mail server, webapp server, etc., that developers can find the collection overwhelming.

In this session Noel lays out a clear road map to navigating the many valuable components of Jakarta, introducing you to these various technologies, and describing how to install and begin using the key components.
